A Scout is HELPFUL
An important part of our duty as Scouts is to help others. One of the ways we help our community is through organized service projects. In addition to the benefits we provide to others, participation in these projects helps you meet your service hour requirement for rank advancement.

Midlothian Flags
A proud tradition in Midlothian is the distinctive display of American flags along Midlothian Turnpike on holidays. Along with Troop 897, we are responsible for posting and retrieving the flags. The flags are displayed on:
  • Patriot's Day (September 11)
  • Midlothian Day (3rd Saturday in October)
  • Veteran's Day
  • President's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Flag Day
  • Independence Day
We split these dates between the two troops. Scouts meet at Jewett-Bass Hall and, unless otherwise noted on the calendar, we post flags at 7:00 AM and take them down at 6:00 PM. Scouts earn service hours.

Committee Member in charge of Flags: Mrs. Jones.

Adopt-A-Highway Road Clean-Up

Troop 876 does road clean-up near Midlothian High School four times a year. We collect roadside trash on Charter Colony Parkway from Midlothian Turnpike to North Woolridge Road, North Woolridge from Charter Colony to Coalfield Road, and LeGordon Drive from Charter Colony Parkway to Midlothian Turnpike.

The Charter Colony/North Woolridge section was adopted in memory of Larry Rosendale. Mr. Rosendale was the father of Troop 876 Eagle Mark Rosendale and served as an adult leader with both Troop 876 and Troop 879. The LeGordon section was adopted in memory of Joe Newsome, father of Robbie and Tommy Newsome and an adult leader in Troop 876.

For this activity, wear Class B uniform (unless directed otherwise) and bring work gloves. We meet in the teacher parking lot at Midlothian High School.

Committee Member in charge of Road Clean-Up: Mr. Schwarzmann.

Scouting for Food

Each November we participate in Scouting for Food, the Heart of Virginia Council's Annual Good Turn. Bags are put out by Cubs, Scout and Venturers all across the council. The project is done over two consecutive Saturdays. The first week, we distribute distribute special grocery bags to homes in our assigned neighborhoods (referred to as "Bags Out"). On the following Saturday ("Bags In"), we canvass the same neighborhoods and collect bags that have been filled with donated non-perishable food and left outside by residents.

For our part of Scouting For Food, we meet at Queensmill pool. Bags Out starts at 8:30 AM. Queensmill pool is located at the corner of Lady Ashley Road and Kingscross Road. This opportunity to help others will take no longer that one hour with full participation. All participating scouts will receive one hour toward service. In addition to full scout participation, adults are needed to drive the routes we are assigned.

Uniform: Class A

Committee Member in charge of Scouting for Food: Mr. Holmes.
